Albania's capital is loud, friendly and fast-changing. Painted apartment blocks, café-lined boulevards and the Blloku district, once reserved for the communist elite, now packed with bars, make it an easy place to start.
Two Cold War bunkers turned museums, Bunk'Art 1 and 2, are the best introduction to the country's recent history.

How to get to Tirana
- Tirana International Airport (TIA) is about 17 km north-west of the centre. The airport bus runs into the city roughly hourly; taxis take 25–40 minutes depending on traffic.
- Most intercity buses now use the North–South bus terminal on the western side of the city, but some minibuses still leave from other stops. Check with your accommodation the day before.
Watch out for
- Traffic is heavy at rush hour. Allow extra time to reach the airport.
- With airport taxis, use the official rank and confirm the fare before you get in.
