The road from Vlorë to the Riviera climbs through Llogara National Park to a pass at just over 1,000 m, then drops in tight hairpins to the coast. At the top, the whole Ionian shoreline opens up below you, often with paragliders drifting over it.

The park's black pine and fir forests are cool even in August, and the roadside restaurants are known for spit-roast lamb and mountain tea. Julius Caesar is said to have landed his army on the beach at Palasë below in 48 BC.

Don't miss in Llogara Pass

  • The viewpoint at the top of the pass over Dhërmi and Palasë
  • Short forest walks in Llogara National Park
  • Tandem paragliding from the ridge in summer
  • Lunch of roast lamb at one of the pass-top restaurants

How to get to Llogara Pass

  • By car: about 1 hour south of Vlorë on the SH8, or 30 minutes up from Dhërmi.
  • By bus: Riviera buses between Vlorë and Sarandë cross the pass; ask the driver to stop at the top.

Watch out for

  • The south side is a series of steep hairpins. Use low gears on the descent.
  • Cloud can roll over the pass quickly and hide the view; mornings are often clearest.
  • It's noticeably colder than the coast, so bring a layer.
