High in the hills west of Korçë, Voskopojë was one of the largest and richest trading towns in the Balkans in the 18th century, with its own printing press and academy.
Most of it was destroyed in later wars, but a handful of stone churches survived, covered inside with remarkable frescoes. Today it's a quiet mountain village of guesthouses, pine forests and fresh air.
Don't miss in Voskopojë
- The frescoes of St Nicholas and St Athanasius churches
- Forest walks around the village
- Guesthouse lunches with local produce
- Snow and a small ski slope in winter
How to get to Voskopojë
- From Korçë: about 30 minutes by car or taxi.
- Local minibuses run from Korçë, but not often; a taxi is easier.
Watch out for
- Church opening times are irregular; ask in the village or at your guesthouse for the key holder.
- It's cool even in summer evenings at over 1,100 m.
