Durrës is one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic, founded by Greek colonists in the 7th century BC. In the middle of town sits a huge Roman amphitheatre, rediscovered in the 1960s and still being excavated.
It's also Albania's main port and the closest beach to Tirana, with a long seafront promenade and sandy beaches stretching south.
